Since its establishment in 2015, Tswelopele Chorus has been using choral music to inspire young people and provide a platform for talented singers from across Gauteng, North West, Mpumalanga and Limpopo.
Founded by Siyabonga Dlamini and Sibusiso Sithole, the registered non-profit organisation consists of about 52 choristers. Its name, Tswelopele, meaning “progress” in Sesotho, reflects the choir’s commitment to creating a positive, drug-free and crime-free environment where young people can develop their musical talents.
Over the years, the choir has built an impressive track record, winning the Development Section at the Tshwane Choral Music Festival in 2015 before progressing to compete in major festivals such as the Gauteng Choral Music Association Festival, the National Choir Festival and the Lengau Choral Music Festival. It has also performed at corporate events for companies including Computershare and Standard Bank.
Despite these achievements, the choir is facing financial challenges and is appealing for sponsorship to continue participating in camps and performances.
“Our biggest challenge at the moment is funding. We need support for camp accommodation, transport for choristers to and from camps, transport to showcase performances, as well as catering during camps and at showcase events. Every contribution will help us continue developing young talent and creating opportunities for young people through music,” said choir conductor Bongani Maphanga.
The choir is inviting businesses, organisations and community members to partner with it through sponsorships or donations to ensure it can continue empowering young people through music.
