From dumping site to green space

What was once an illegal dumping site in Driezek has been transformed into a vibrant public park, providing residents with a safe recreational space while contributing to a greener Johannesburg South.

The redevelopment of Lilly Street Park was made possible through a partnership between Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ), Pikitup, Joburg Water, Ward 4 Councillor Simon Molefe and local stakeholders. The project forms part of the City’s ongoing efforts to reclaim neglected public spaces and improve the quality of life for communities.

Speaking to Orange Farm News, JCPZ spokesperson Christopher Pholwana said restoring the site was the result of collaboration and a shared commitment to creating a better environment.

“The site had become a dumping ground, but everyone came together to reclaim it and create a place where people can relax, children can play and families can spend time together,” said Pholwana.

He said the park is not only a recreational facility but also an important environmental investment.

“Johannesburg South has a much smaller tree canopy than Johannesburg North. Parks help improve the environment, and by planting more trees we are contributing to climate resilience while creating healthier neighbourhoods for our communities,” he said.

The upgraded park features modern playground equipment with rubber safety surfacing, newly planted trees, improved lighting, additional litter bins and upgraded road markings, making the area safer and more accessible for residents of all ages.

Pholwana encouraged the community to take ownership of the facility by keeping it clean, protecting its infrastructure and reporting any acts of vandalism.

The unveiling of Lilly Street Park was attended by City officials, local leadership, educators, learners and residents, who celebrated the successful revival of a once-neglected site into a welcoming public space that is expected to serve the community for years to come.
