From food queue to caregiver as EPWP changes life in Evaton

A former beneficiary of Thy Kingdom Care Centre in Evaton is now giving back to her community as a caregiver through the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).

Nhlanhla Dlomo’s journey was highlighted during a monitoring and evaluation visit by the Gauteng Department of Social Development’s HIV and AIDS Unit to the department-funded non-profit organisation.

Dlomo said she understands the struggles faced by vulnerable families because she once relied on the centre’s support.

“I have witnessed first-hand the challenges faced by vulnerable people because I was once a beneficiary myself. Today, I am able to give back to the community by helping others and encouraging young people to make use of the services available to them,” she said.

She added that children and young people visit the centre for homework support, afternoon snacks and other services.

“We are proud to have Thy Kingdom Care Centre in our community because it brings hope, support and opportunities to young people,” Dlomo said.

GDSD’s Kokobetsa Ramokgola said the EPWP equips unemployed participants with training, skills and practical work experience while providing a stipend.

“The programme is designed to equip participants with training, skills development, and practical work experience that will enhance their future employability,” he said.

Thy Kingdom Care Centre also provides HIV and AIDS awareness, school and community outreach, support for survivors of abuse, assistance to vulnerable children and substance abuse prevention programmes.

The department said the visit formed part of its efforts to monitor compliance and assess the impact of funded programmes in communities.
