A man has been arrested after a bakkie was hijacked and the victim’s brother was stabbed in Orange Farm on Wednesday morning, 19 August.

According to Orange Farms SAPS spokesperson Sgt Shaan Motsapi, the suspect and his accomplice hired the bakkie to travel to the Bhekane area to collect belongings.

The pair later hijacked the driver and stabbed his brother with a knife before fleeing with the vehicle.

Police were given a description of the bakkie and immediately launched a search.

“Members responded swiftly and, while patrolling along the Golden Highway near Duzenendlela School, spotted a bakkie matching the description of the hijacked vehicle,” said Motsapi.

When police stopped the vehicle, both men jumped out and fled on foot. Officers gave chase and managed to arrest one suspect, while his accomplice escaped and remains at large.

“Police recovered a knife with suspected blood stains, as well as a cellphone believed to belong to the suspect,” Motsapi said.

The arrested man was detained at Orange Farms SAPS and is expected to appear in the Vereeniging Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession of a hijacked motor vehicle and attempted murder.

Motsapi said police investigations are continuing and officers are working to trace the second suspect.
