Jabulile Primary School’s netball team has secured a place in the national stage of the prestigious Kay Motsepe Schools championship after an impressive performance at the provincial competition held at Hoërskool Florida on 20 June.
The talented young athletes played five matches against some of the province’s strongest schools, recording victories over Reddam, Sikhululekile, Erasmus and Reshogofaditswe. Their most convincing win came in the final match, where they defeated Reshogofaditswe 18-6 to claim the provincial title. Their outstanding performance earned the team gold medals and the tournament trophy, crowning them as provincial champions.
The team’s scoring power came from goal attack Evelyn and goal shooter Reatlegile, who consistently delivered crucial goals throughout the tournament.
Team manager and teacher Nontobeko Mthembu praised the players for their determination and teamwork.
“All the players stood out with their hard work and determination. They maintained a positive spirit both on and off the court. Qualifying for the national stage is a remarkable achievement, and every player should be proud of their contribution,” Mthembu told OFN.
Despite the team’s success, Mthembu acknowledged that the road to victory was not always easy. She identified Erasmus as one of the toughest opponents they faced during the competition.
“It was difficult competing against schools that have more resources than we do. We are not as privileged, but our determination and commitment kept us going,” she said.
Jabulile qualified for the provincial tournament after winning all their matches in the local Thursday League before progressing through the regional stage.
The team captain, Ntando Ramoslabo, led the squad throughout the tournament as they battled their way to provincial honours.
With their provincial success secured, the team will now represent the province at the national championships. Although the exact date has not yet been confirmed, Mthembu said the team is excited about the opportunity.
“We are moving on to the nationals, and the learners are excited. This achievement is a source of pride for the school and the entire community,” she added.
Mthembu also expressed gratitude to supporters who played a role in the team’s journey.
“I would like to thank Gift Makhokhoba Gabelang, who has supported the school since the league started, as well as the school management, parents and the community. We would not be here without these stakeholders. Their support motivates our players to strive for excellence.”
The national tournament will offer competitors the chance to battle for top honours, including trophies and medals, as Jabulile Primary continues its quest for sporting glory.
