On 17 October, worried parents of Solwazi Primary learners, along with Ward 5 Councillor Mxolisi Ndzondo, clarified the confusion surrounding concerns about supposedly expired food donated to the school.
This clarification follows reports of expired donated mince, which circulated on social media. The management of Solwazi Primary School, located in Drieziek 5 Orange Farm, acknowledged parents’ concerns regarding suspected “expired” Soya Mince packets given to learners on Monday.
These donations, provided by Miss Earth, originated from a manufacturing company and reached the school on October 16, 2023. Upon notification, the Principal promptly confiscated the packets, although Grade R and 1 learners had already taken them home. The Principal immediately contacted Miss Earth, and the donor company was consulted. All parties sincerely apologized to parents and students, attributing the issue to a mistake in the company’s printing department.
This incident is an isolated occurrence and since Miss Earth adopted our school for the feeding scheme and other learning aids, they have been consistently supportive. The school assures that such mishaps will not recur and requests continued support, cooperation, and understanding.
Councillor Ndzondo, remarked, “We successfully resolved this confusion with parents and school management. We were assured that no child ate or fell ill, and the donors issued a statement explaining the situation. We appreciate parents and concerned residents for taking this matter seriously, as well as the school for their decisive action. It’s also a reminder for everyone to be vigilant about expiry dates; they are crucial and should not be overlooked.”
