The sound of music was replaced by the roar of football fans as DJs from Orange Farm and the Vaal came together for a unique tournament at Ext 9 Phase 1, proving that sport can unite people just as powerfully as music.
Hosted by MQ and Ta Nyeezy, the event featured an exciting line-up of matches, beginning with a lively ladies’ fixture before the much-anticipated showdown between the Hip-Hop & R&B DJs and the House DJs. Spectators lined the sidelines to cheer on their favourite teams, creating an energetic atmosphere throughout the day.
The headline match lived up to expectations, with both teams delivering an entertaining display of football. Neither side was willing to give an inch as the game ended in a thrilling 4-4 draw after regulation time. The winner was eventually decided in a penalty shootout, where the House DJs kept their composure to claim a 2-1 victory.
While the football provided plenty of excitement, organisers said the event was about much more than the final score.
“Our main aim for this match was unity. We wanted to bring the patrons, fans and DJs of Orange Farm and the Vaal together as one collective community, using the universal languages of music and sport,” said the organisers.
The tournament brought together people from different communities and musical backgrounds in a spirit of friendship and healthy competition. Supporters embraced the opportunity to celebrate local talent both on and off the field, demonstrating that music and sport have the power to break down barriers and build lasting relationships.
Following the success of the event, organisers announced plans to make the football tournament a monthly fixture. They are also calling on local businesses, sponsors and community stakeholders to partner with the initiative to help expand its reach and ensure it continues to benefit the community.
The event received support from Blk Zeus and Ivatii, while Timeline Radio sponsored the tournament, helping make the day possible.
Although the House DJs walked away as champions after a dramatic penalty shootout, the true success of the day was the unity created between Orange Farm and the Vaal. With plans already in place for future tournaments, organisers hope the initiative will continue to bring communities together through a shared love of football and music.
