Sakhile Khowane (29), from Drieziek 4, is the founder of Ushuni Wokotini, a clothing brand inspired by his life experiences and the community that shaped him.
After losing both his parents, Sakhile faced one of the most difficult chapters of his life. Rather than allowing grief to define his future, he chose to focus on building something meaningful for himself and others.
“After my parents passed, life told me, ‘It’s over.’ I told myself, ‘There is still a life for me.’ So I chose it. I built it.” Sakhile told OFN .
The name Ushuni Wokotini, which means “cotton shoes” in isiZulu, reflects humble beginnings and working-class values. The brand features caps, hoodies, vests and its signature navy suede penny loafers embroidered with gold lettering.
Khowane says the idea behind the brand was to create something that represents township stories and culture, while reminding young people that where they come from should never limit their ambitions.
“I grew up seeing brands that looked expensive but felt foreign. Kids from the kasi were paying to wear someone else’s story. I asked myself: Why can’t our own language, our own struggle and our own Drieziek 4 premium?” he added.
Through Ushuni Wokotini, Khowane hopes to inspire other young entrepreneurs to turn their challenges into opportunities and pursue their dreams with confidence.
The brand’s products are available across South Africa through Pep Paxi delivery services.
