Afrika Tikkun’s Centres of Excellence united in a spirited celebration of literacy and youth talent at the 2025 Annual Spelling Bee, hosted at the Arekopaneng Centre in Orange Farm on 23 August.

The competition saw 60 participants in the Ignite programme from all five centres of excellence go head-to-head across four age categories: 7–9, 10–12, 13–15, and 16–18 years. With only two top spots available in each group, the contest was intense, inspiring, and filled with unforgettable moments of determination and skill.

Before a lively audience, the young contestants impressed with their mastery of the English language, confidently spelling challenging words with focus and poise. Their performances underscored the positive impact of literacy development initiatives such as Read for Africa and the University of Cape Town Online High School, which many participants engage with weekly.

“This competition is not just about spelling words correctly; it’s about empowering young minds, building confidence, and cultivating a love for reading and lifelong learning,” said Tshepo Motaung, Ignite Programme Manager at the Arekopaneng Centre.

The diverse representation among the winners highlights the strong academic foundations being built across Afrika Tikkun’s Centres of Excellence. More than a contest, the Annual Spelling Bee forms part of the organisation’s broader mission to create opportunities that uplift, inspire, and prepare South Africa’s next generation of leaders.
