City Power on high alert for adverse weather

City Power teams across Service Delivery Centres (SDCs) in Johannesburg are closely monitoring the anticipated inclement weather conditions.

As per the forecast by the South African Weather Service, a significant drop in temperatures may bring a strong cold front, accompanied by wind and rainstorms, from Saturday afternoon, 8 July, until Tuesday, 11 July.

Isaac Mangena, spokesperson for City Power, warns about the potential increase in electricity demand during these weather conditions, which could strain the network and impact infrastructure and the mobility of technicians.

“Our teams are on high alert, and we will increase resources in high-pressure areas in a bid to minimise the disruption of power supply to our residential customers,” Mangena adds.

City Power is implementing precautionary measures and allocating additional resources to SDCs to mitigate potential outages caused by adverse weather. He urges residents to use electricity sparingly to prevent excessive demand and potential overloading.

“Customers are encouraged to explore alternative heating and cooking methods to alleviate strain on the grid,” says Mangena. He advises residents to switch off unused lights and appliances, particularly during peak hours, and to unplug heavy appliances such as geysers, stoves, and heaters at least 15 minutes before power restoration to avoid inrush currents and trips.

Mangena cautions that repairs and restorations might be delayed due to load shedding and the anticipated adverse weather. “Our teams may not be able to locate the faults, conduct tests, or do repairs during this time,” Mangena said.

Customers are urged to promptly report any damage to infrastructure caused by severe weather or to raise electricity-related queries through the dedicated helpline (011 490 7484) or by logging calls on the City Power mobile platform: citypower.mobi. For energy-saving tips, residents can visit the City Power website at www.citypower.co.za.
