The Setjhaba Sotlhe National Business Forum (SNBF) recently hosted a Youth Dialogue in Drieziek Extension 4, opposite the local library, bringing together young people and representatives from several City of Johannesburg entities.
The dialogue featured officials from City Parks, City Power, Johannesburg Water, and the Department of Urban Management, creating a platform for residents to raise concerns, learn about available services, and engage directly with the relevant departments.
Speaking during the event, Nkosiyezwe from the Department of Urban Management explained that the department serves as a bridge between communities and City of Johannesburg entities.
“Our role is to connect communities with the relevant city departments whenever there are service delivery issues or complaints. We are the eyes and ears of the community, receiving concerns from residents and referring them to the appropriate departments for intervention. We also monitor projects and programmes taking place within communities to ensure that interventions are implemented where they are needed,” Nkosiyezwe said.
The dialogue also focused on empowering young people through entrepreneurship and employment opportunities.
According to Bangile Mgcina, leader of the Setjhaba Sotlhe National Business Forum, the organisation is committed to supporting young entrepreneurs and helping unemployed youth access opportunities.
“We have programmes aimed at young people who already own businesses, while also assisting those who are looking for employment opportunities. With unemployment continuing to affect many young people in our country, we believe it is important to create initiatives that offer support, guidance and access to opportunities,” said Mgcina.
The event gave community members the opportunity to engage directly with city officials, ask questions, and gain a better understanding of how different municipal departments operate. It also highlighted the importance of collaboration between government entities and community organisations in addressing local challenges and creating opportunities for young people.
