Gauteng Ubuntu champions, Thamsanqa Secondary School defeated Tswelopele Secondary School 22-21 in a thrilling DStv Schools Netball Challenge provincial final that went into extra time on 14- 15 June at Hoërskool Florida in Roodeport.
The victory secures the Orange Farm school’s place at the national finals, which will take place from 23 to 25 July at Hoërskool Dr E.G. Jansen in Boksburg.
In a match that kept spectators on the edge of their seats, neither side was able to gain a decisive advantage during regulation time, forcing the final into extra time. Thamsanqa ultimately held their nerve to claim the one-point victory and lift the provincial trophy.
The DStv Schools Netball Challenge, powered by Bestmed Medical Scheme, is South Africa’s premier schools netball competition and serves as a platform for identifying and developing future national players.
Thamsanqa will be joined by Tswelopele Secondary School and Tholulwazi Secondary School as Gauteng’s representatives in the Ubuntu division at the national finals.
Speaking to Orange Farm News, school principal Willikas Maleba described the achievement as a proud moment for the school and the community.
“We are very proud of our learners for winning the Gauteng championship. This achievement is a result of hard work, discipline and commitment from the players and the technical team. We would also like to thank coach Precious Nchabeleng and Mpehlo for their dedication and contribution to the team’s success,” said Maleba.
He added that the school hopes the team can build on its success and continue making Orange Farm proud at the national tournament.
The Gauteng title marks one of the biggest sporting achievements for the school and further highlights the growing talent emerging from Orange Farm.
