Orange Farm erupted in pride as local football star Siyabonga Mbongo, a learner at Masibambane College, scored the decisive goal that led South Africa’s U17 national team to victory at the COSAFA U17 Championship final against Angola.
The 2–1 win not only secured the trophy but also earned Amajimbos a place in the 2026 CAF U17 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Siyabonga’s achievement has become a beacon of hope for the township, proving that Orange Farm has talent. His journey is a powerful motivation to other young players to believe in themselves and their potential. Many now believe it is only a matter of time before Orange Farm produces its own PSL star, just as the Vaal region gave South African football Orlando Pirates sensation Relebohile Mofokeng and others.
At a celebratory gathering held at Masibambane College, his internal coach Mr Malanda described Siyabonga as a dedicated and humble player who leads by example. External coach Mr Sandile from RESA praised his sharp eye for goals and tireless work rate, while GDE Sports official Mr Roni encouraged learners to balance sporting excellence with education. Siyabonga’s father, Mr Dlamini, reminded parents of the value of guidance and support in shaping their children’s futures.
To mark the occasion, the school presented Siyabonga with a framed jersey, a symbol of his representation and inspiration for both Masibambane College and the wider Orange Farm community.
In a statement, Masibambane College said: “We are incredibly proud of Siyabonga. His dedication and talent have not only brought glory to our school but have also put Orange Farm on the national football map.”
This victory is proof that the kasi can produce top-class players. With the right resources and support, more young stars from townships like Orange Farm will shine on bigger stages. Siyabonga Mbongo’s winning goal is not just a triumph for South Africa – it is a triumph for Orange Farm.
