We’ve all experienced some discharge, but let’s admit that it’s a pretty awkward thing to talk about. When a discharge is normal ‘fertility discharge’ there is no need to stress. But if it’s itchy or smelly, you need to go to a chemist or a doctor/clinic – especially if you have had sex. Kotex shares more details below…
Types of discharge
Fertility discharge: This happens two weeks before your next period and looks like raw egg white. It’s wet and slippery, does not smell or itch and gives you a ‘wet panty feeling’. This is normal and nothing to worry about.
Brown mucus
This is usually a sign that your period is about to start or end. It’s not ‘bad blood’, just blood that may have been there for longer than a day. Old blood goes brown.
Thick, white and clumpy discharge
This is usually a vaginal yeast infection also known as candidiasis, which is common and is caused by an imbalance of bacteria in your system.
Itchy discharge
Usually means a fungal infection like thrush.
Fishy-smelling discharge
This is usually an infection called bacterial vaginitis and is not a sexually transmitted infection. Smelly, frothy, green/yellow/white discharge is a sign of an infection – usually one that’s been passed on during sex. It’s important to have this type of discharge investigated and treated. If you haven’t had your first period, vaginal discharge is one of the signs that your period might be on its way.

White and yellow discharge
In pre-menstrual girls, the sticky white to slightly yellow vaginal discharge is perfectly normal too. It starts when your body changes during puberty. Don’t worry about it. It simply means that your body is maturing and changing and preparing to have a period one day.
Discharge during your cyclea cycle
Is from the first day of one period to the first day of your next period. Once you have stopped bleeding, you will notice that your vagina is dry for a few days. Then you may notice your fertility discharge (see above). It simply means that your body is fertile during this time. You have ovulated – ripened an egg. You will also notice that your mood is good and your confidence swinging. This is because your hormones (oestrogen and progesterone) have peaked and this makes you feel good about yourself!When this happens, mark this date on your calendar.
Then count 14 days forward and you will be able to predict (to the day when you get good at it) when your next period will begin.
How to deal with discharge
There are ways to ensure you feel more comfortable with it. Try the following: Panty liners or thin pads are a great way to protect your undies from first-day period leaks and any kind of discharge. Don’t wear tight jeans. Always wipe from front to back after peeing. Don’t put bubbles or perfumed oil into your bath water. Cut down on sweets and pastries, especially if you have an itchy discharge. Try talking to a friend or a trusted family member about your questions. These things might seem easier if you have someone you can feel comfortable talking to.
