Uthando Youth Club was founded five years ago by Portia Minwas Thwala with the vision of keeping children off the streets and away from negative influences. Through dance and mentorship, the club provides young people with a positive environment where they can learn, grow and express themselves.
Thwala said she started the club because many children face challenges at home and often do not feel comfortable sharing their problems with their parents.

“The main reason I started the club was to keep children off the streets and prevent them from getting involved in the wrong activities. Some children are not always able to open up to their parents, so I provide them with a safe space where they can talk freely and feel supported during dance lessons,” she said.
She added that every child comes from a different background, and for some members, the club serves as a place of refuge where they can feel accepted and encouraged.
Since its establishment, Uthando Youth Club has grown beyond its original base and now has branches in Evaton, Jackson and Sebokeng Zone 3, allowing the organisation to reach and support more young people in the community.
Despite its success, the club continues to face challenges. One of the biggest challenges is a lack of transport funding, which makes it difficult for members to travel to performances and events. To raise money, the group often performs at shopping malls and other public spaces.
Another challenge is that some children occasionally tell their parents they are attending dance lessons when they are not, creating difficulties for both the club and parents.
Even with these challenges, Uthando Youth Club remains committed to empowering young people through dance, discipline and mentorship. The club continues to inspire children to stay focused on their goals, build self-confidence and make positive choices for their future.
