The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) is deeply saddened to announce the untimely and tragic passing of one of our dedicated members, Officer Lindani Moses Maleka, who was fatally shot whilst off duty during the early evening of 13 April 2026.
The incident occurred at Sizanani Street, Ext 6a, Orange Farm, shortly after Officer Maleka had completed his shift.
According to preliminary reports, it’s alleged that Officer Maleka aged 30 had arrived at a residence to visit a companion. While seated in his vehicle, the officer and his female companion were approached by unidentified suspects.
The suspects allegedly forcibly removed the female passenger from the vehicle before opening fire on Officer Maleka. Tragically, the officer sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
Despite the violent nature of the attack, the officer’s service firearm was not taken from the scene. A case of Murder has been opened at Orange Farm SAPS.
“The department is devastated by this senseless act of violence. We lose not just a colleague, but a protector of this city. Our deepest condolences go out to the Maleka family and his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” said JMPD Chief of Police Commissioner Patrick Jaca.
We urge anyone with information regarding this incident or the identities of the suspects to come forward. Members of the public can contact the investigating team or provide anonymous tips via the SAPS Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
