A coordinated search operation involving police, K9 officers and private security drone operators has brought relief to residents of Vereeniging and surrounding areas after authorities successfully located a lion reportedly roaming freely in the area.
The discovery follows reports that sparked concern among residents, with social media posts about the animal circulating across local community platforms.
SAPS Vereeniging was alerted to the situation on Tuesday, 13 October, at approximately 04:00, after a K9 Unit member became aware of a social media post reporting a lion roaming freely in a remote area.
Police and drone operators join forces
Following the alert, SAPS Vereeniging mobilised resources and joined forces with the K9 Unit, private security drone operators and other relevant stakeholders to locate the animal.
“The lion has since been located, and arrangements have been finalised by the relevant professionals to safely relocate it to a secure environment,” SAPS Vereeniging confirmed.
However, while the discovery has eased concerns, questions remain about how the animal ended up roaming in the area and who is responsible for it.
“The ownership of the animal remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing to establish its origin,” police revealed.
The circumstances surrounding the lion’s presence in the area have not yet been established, leaving authorities working to uncover its origin.
Police warn against social media misinformation
Amid growing public interest in the unusual incident, SAPS has raised concerns about misleading information circulating on social media.
“The police are concerned about the circulation of false and unverified information on social media that has caused unnecessary panic,” SAPS cautioned.
Community members have been urged to refrain from sharing unconfirmed reports and instead rely on official police communication for accurate updates.
Residents of Sedibeng and surrounding areas have also been encouraged to remain calm while authorities and wildlife experts work to conclude the relocation operation safely.
Although the lion has been located, police have not disclosed its exact whereabouts or provided further details about the circumstances that led to its discovery.
For now, the mystery remains: Where did the lion come from, and who does it belong to?
Investigations are continuing as authorities work to establish the animal’s origin.
The information was confirmed by SAPS Vereeniging on Thursday, 15 October 2026, on behalf of Acting Station Commander Colonel R Elias Thithi.
