South African Football Association (SAFA) President Dr Danny Jordaan visited the late Siphiwe Mkhonza’s family home in Kwa-Thema in the East Rand to pay his respects.
The SAFA President was accompanied by NEC members Mxolisi Sibam, Buddha Mathathe and Job Mchunu as well as CEO Lydia Monyepao, who played under Siphiwe’s father Joseph Mkhonza in the Banyana Banyana team.Joseph Mkhonza is the former Banyana Banyana coach who took the women’s senior national team to the London Olympics in 2012.
He met the SAFA delegation and welcomed them to his home.The 44-year-old Siphiwe, who played for Bafana Bafana, Kaizer Chiefs, Golden Arrows and Bloemfontein Celtic, among others, passed away at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital on Tuesday, 5 March after illness. He was a soccer analyst at the SABC at the time of his passing. The Mkhoza family confirmed that a Memorial Service will be held in his honour at SABC Radio Park in Auckland Park on Friday, 8 March.
The former Bafana Bafana defender will be buried in Kwa-Thema on Sunday, 10 March. Dr Jordaan said it was disheartening to lose such a talented young life at the height of his career.
