Orange Farm may not have had a grand stadium or cheering thousands, but young runners had something worth celebrating as they put their speed and determination on display during a 5km fun run and walk.
Hosted by Tornado Athletics Club at Solwazi Primary School in Drieziek 5 on 18 October, the event was more than a race. It was an opportunity for local talent to shine and for residents to rediscover the joy of being active.
Thabang Mokena led the boys’ category, claiming first place ahead of Fusi Ntoloane, who finished second, and Siphesihle Skhakhane in third.
In the girls’ category, Olivia Sithole took top honours, followed by Thandeka in second place and Nqobile Sthlogome in third.
While the young athletes earned recognition for their performances, the bigger message was that sport does not always need expensive facilities or major competitions to make an impact in communities.
Coach Joseph Ntoloane believes initiatives like these can inspire young people and families to make exercise part of their daily lives.
“Our goal is to encourage people to live healthier lives through exercise. We want to see more young people and families participating in activities that promote fitness, unity and a positive lifestyle,” Ntoloane said.
With the slogan “Let’s bring back the fun by living a healthy lifestyle”, the club is encouraging residents to see fitness as something enjoyable rather than a chore.
For Orange Farm’s young runners, the event offered a chance to be recognised, while reminding the community that sporting talent can be celebrated right on its doorstep.
