In an effort to bolster climate action and disaster preparedness, Orange Farm’s Intouch Youth Development, as a member of the Grassroot for Climate Action Group (G4CA), recently embarked on an enlightening journey to the South African Weather Service to gain deeper insights into the agency’s critical mission of providing timely disaster alerts to safeguard citizens.
The visit proved to be an eye-opening experience, shedding light on both the challenges faced and the strides made in this essential area.
The visit commenced with an introduction by Mr Oupa Segwale, the Senior Manager of Communications and Stakeholder Relations at the South African Weather Service. Segwale extended a warm welcome and gave the opening remarks, emphasizing the importance of effective communication in ensuring the safety and well-being of all South Africans.
Mrs Elizabeth Viljoen, a Senior Forecaster at the service, followed with a comprehensive presentation on how the South African Weather Service disseminates critical weather and disaster information to the general public. Her insightful presentation shed light on the intricate processes and technologies involved in providing accurate and timely alerts to the nation.
Adding another layer of understanding to the visit, Mr Ezekiel Sebogo, the Disaster Risk Reduction Manager, offered valuable insights into the agency’s disaster resolution strategies.
