Mxengeni Eric Lembethe (44), an ex-convict, will make his appearance in the Palm Ridge Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 07 July 2023, for the murder of a police officer.
This follows his arrest on Friday, 30 June 2023 in Orange Farm during an intelligence driven operation led by the Germiston based Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team in concert with Crime Intelligence, Sedibeng Tactical Response Team, Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department, Gauteng Traffic, West Rand Infrastructure Detective Unit, Johannesburg Infrastructure Protection Unit, Ratanda SAPS Detective Unit and the City of Ekurhuleni.
“Lembethe was allegedly linked to the murder of Sergeant Gift Moloi who was stationed at the Thokoza police station. On 10 December 2022, Sergeant Moloi was off duty accompanying a friend in his private vehicle when Lembethe and his accomplices reportedly hijacked, shot and killed Moloi whilst a friend sustained injuries from the incident,” said Hawks spokesperson Colonel Philani Nkwalase.
Further investigation also linked Lembethe to another murder case investigated by Ratanda SAPS detectives and he is expected to appear in the Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 06 July 2023.
