On Monday, 01 May, orange Farms SAPS arrested a 34-year-old suspect at a local clinic for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, following a Golden Highway chase and shooting of the suspect.
At about 10am, the police were patrolling the Golden Highway for crime prevention duties when they spotted a suspicious motor vehicle travelling towards Johannesburg.
“The police instructed the driver who was with three occupants to pull off the road. The driver sped off and police gave chase, the vehicle stopped after a four-way stop near Tjovitjo Squatter camp. One of the occupants who was sitting at the back alighted and started running away. The vehicle drove off, police ran after the person who alighted the vehicle. He pulled a firearm and pointed at the police, who managed to shoot him on the arm, he dropped the firearm, ran away and disappeared inside the squatter camp,” Orange Farms SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Shaan Motsapi told Orange Farm News.
Police swiftly investigated and traced the suspect who was later found at a clinic, seeking medical attention.
“After receiving treatment, he was released to the police for arrest and detention for possession of an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition,” Motsapi added.
Orange Farms SAPS’ Station Commander, Brigadier Raymond Buthelezi applauded the involved members for diligent work and response against crime, as well as disarming and apprehending the suspect who was about to commit crime using the unlicensed firearm.
The suspect will soon appear at the Vereeniging Magistrate’s court facing charges of possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.
