On 14 June, young minds clashed in silence as Johannesburg South hosted a district-level chess competition at Matiwane Combined School in Ext 7b.

The event brought together some of the sharpest young chess players from both local and inner-city schools, all competing for a chance to represent Gauteng at the provincial championships. The atmosphere was intense yet inspiring, as learners competed in age categories U11, U13, U15 and U18 showcasing not just their skill, but focus, discipline and strategy far beyond their years.

Each team was made up of seven players, representing their respective schools with pride. The tournament saw participation from a mix of high schools and primary schools. Among the high schools were Leshata, Masibambane, Raphela, Aha-Thuto, Johannesburg Central, Glen Vista, Helpmekaar and Trinity, to name a few.

On the primary school front, Tshepana, Reamohetsoe, Matiwane, Langa Libalele and Lenasia South all fielded teams. The winners of the day didn’t just walk away with medals – they earned their spot to compete at the provincial championships, where they will face off against top schools from across South Africa.

This tournament was more than just a battle of brains; it was a celebration of youth excellence and academic talent, proving once again that Orange Farm and surrounding communities are home to future champions.
