Senior citizens spent the day making crafts, sharing skills and enjoying wildlife when Johannesburg Zoo partnered with 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day to celebrate Senior Citizens Month. The event took place at the zoo on 27 October, welcoming visitors aged 60 and above for free entry and activities aimed at bringing older residents together.
Volunteers from 67 Blankets, known as KnitWits, helped senior citizens learn knitting and crocheting while creating an opportunity for them to socialise and make new friends. Robinson Grealy, chief operating officer of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, said the partnership was about bringing people together, creating memories and building friendships.
Queens Haven Home has also been working with the organisation through its craft activities. Auxiliary social worker Violet Mzangwe said the home had received 2,400 balls of wool and completed 39 blankets. The home’s residents joined the gathering to continue knitting and crocheting alongside other participants. Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo spokesperson Jenny Moodley said the event was an opportunity to recognise and appreciate older people for their contribution to families and communities.
The celebration formed part of Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo’s programme for Senior Citizens Month. Throughout October, residents aged 60 and above were offered free entry to the zoo on presentation of their identity documents. The initiative aimed to give older residents an opportunity to enjoy nature, spend time outdoors and create memories with family and friends. Through the partnership, the zoo and 67 Blankets combined community participation with a practical activity that encourages creativity, connection and the making of blankets for people in need.
