A community organisation based in Evaton is working to create opportunities and address social challenges through grassroots programmes aimed at empowering residents and improving community wellbeing.
Founded in 2022, Batsogile Community Organisation is a registered community-based organisation (CBO) operating across Gauteng Province. Led by Founding Chairperson and Executive Director Mhlupheki Simon Ndaba, the organisation focuses on addressing unemployment, crime, health disparities and youth disenfranchisement through a range of integrated programmes.
“Our goal is to empower disadvantaged communities by creating opportunities that improve people’s lives through collaboration and community participation, so we can collectively address the challenges facing our communities,” said Ndaba.
Headquartered in Evaton Township, south of Johannesburg, the organisation uses sport, arts and culture as tools to empower young people while promoting healthier and safer communities.
Batsogile Community Organisation has gained recognition for its grassroots approach, working directly with residents and local stakeholders to raise awareness and provide support on issues such as HIV, tuberculosis (TB), sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).
Despite its efforts, the organisation continues to face a number of challenges. Limited funding remains one of its biggest obstacles, affecting the sustainability and expansion of community programmes. Resource shortages, including laptops, heavy-duty printers, office furniture and transportation, also impact daily operations and service delivery.
The organisation has further identified low participation from the sport, arts and culture sectors in HIV, TB and STI prevention initiatives. It hopes to encourage greater involvement from these sectors to strengthen awareness campaigns and broaden their reach within communities.
Another ongoing challenge is the stigma associated with HIV, TB, STIs and GBVF, which often discourages individuals from seeking support and participating in awareness programmes.
Batsogile Community Organisation has also called for stronger and more consistent partnerships with non-governmental organisations providing on-site HIV Testing Services (HTS) at community events. In addition, a shortage of volunteers continues to limit the organisation’s capacity to expand its services and reach more beneficiaries.
Despite these challenges, the organisation remains committed to its mission of empowering communities and creating positive change. Looking ahead, Batsogile Community Organisation hopes to expand its impact beyond Gauteng and reach communities across South Africa through sustainable programmes and strategic partnerships.
As the organisation continues to grow, it remains focused on building safer, healthier and more inclusive communities where residents, particularly young people, have access to opportunities that can improve their quality of life.
