The City of Johannesburg Region G Department of Social Development and its stakeholders hosted the Colour Walk event on 14 June to commemorate Youth Day, the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, National Cancer Survivor Day, and other wellness-related issues.
Participants included Goldfields Mine, Basic Package of Support (BPS), Batho Pele Community Development Centre, the Department of Sport and Recreation Region G, Lawyers Against Abuse (LVA), Love Life, PCO Orange Farm, Ward 5 CLLR Mr. Ndzondo, Funda Community College, Ubuhle Bemvelo, IsifisoSabantu, Poortjie Pure Talent, Poortjie Old Age Home, Mamelodi Theatre, Thandanani Poortjie for persons with disabilities, and GPAPD.
The 2.7 km walk took place in and around the Poortjie community, starting at the Poortjie Skills Centre and ending at the Poortjie Multi-Purpose Centre. It included youth, children, persons with disabilities, forums for GBV, the LGBTQI community, and adults from the community.
The event was a success, with over 300 participants, youth groups promoting awareness through their talents, and valuable messages from stakeholders and community members.
“Poortjie is a secluded community with limited resources and opportunities for its residents. As stakeholders, we hope this awareness event will highlight the importance of collaboration in supporting the youth and the community at large. We are hopeful for a better future in Poortjie,” Mosiwa Malula.
