The Chris Hani Sports Complex in Orange Farm is progressing towards its vision of being a hub for sporting excellence, talent development and community empowerment.

Located in the Stretford District Node, the complex is set to redefine sports infrastructure in the region. Implemented by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) on behalf of the City of Johannesburg’s Community Development Department, this project exemplifies the City’s commitment to building resilient, sustainable and vibrant urban areas.

The Chris Hani Sports Complex has been designed to provide Olympic-standard facilities and an integrated sports precinct that prioritises sustainability, accessibility, and multifunctionality.

Key elements of the design approach include:

Integrated Design: Combining architecture, landscape architecture, and placemaking for a cohesive precinct.

Community Focus: Defined links, clear entrances, and improved surrounding public environments to integrate with the local context.

Sustainability: Incorporating energy generation, water harvesting and efficient construction methodologies.

Future-Proof Facilities: Accommodating sports specialists, technical and coaching staff, while also providing spaces for broadcasting, revenue generation, and commercial opportunities.

Olympic Standards: Ensuring all facilities meet international and local code standards.

The project has already achieved several key construction milestones:

Soccer Field: 90% complete.

Grandstand: 70% complete.

Stormwater Reticulation: 88% complete.

Multipurpose Courts: 62% complete.

Boundary Wall: 60% complete.

Outdoor Gym: 51% complete.

The complex development will drive socio-economic growth, with 15 local SMMEs engaged, employing 47 residents, including 22 youth and three women. This aligns with the JDA’s commitment to fostering the development of local business empowerment.

In addition to sporting facilities, the Chris Hani Sports Complex includes upgrades to Moyane Drive and 16th Street. These improvements will feature safe pedestrian crossings, paved sidewalks, street furniture, bins, benches, lighting, trader stalls, and soft landscaping, enhancing the overall public environment.

JDA CEO Themba Mathibe expressed enthusiasm about the progress stating: “The Chris Hani Sports Complex embodies the JDA’s vision of creating spaces that are not only functional but also inspire community pride and support talent development. We are thrilled to see this project taking shape, and we are confident it will serve as a cornerstone for sporting excellence in Orange Farm.”

Once completed, the Chris Hani Sports Complex will be a catalyst for youth development, sports excellence and community upliftment in the Stretford District Node, providing a space where the next generation of sporting talent can thrive.
