On 5 October, Magic Gym hosted a powerful Cancer Awareness Marathon at Bakgatleng Pub and Grill, celebrating women who have either conquered or continue to fight against cancer. The event honoured their courage and brought the community together to show support and raise awareness of this critical health issue.

The theme of the day was “all things pink” symbolising solidarity in the fight against breast cancer. Residents turned out in impressive numbers, dressed in shades of pink to commemorate the occasion.

The atmosphere was a blend of joy, education and reflection-a chance for people to learn, connect and share in an uplifting environment. As a health-centred organisation, Magic Gym found it essential to host such a significant event.

Mthembu expressed his gratitude for the positive turnout, saying: “The event went well. We stayed true to the theme, honouring both cancer survivors and those bravely battling it.”

In South Africa, October is nationally recognised as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time for public and private healthcare sectors to rally together to spread awareness across all communities. This effort highlights the importance of early detection, which can be life-saving in the fight against this disease.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting South African women, and the numbers are rising. Although it predominantly affects women, it can also impact men.

Early detection remains key to improving outcomes, as it can lead to more effective treatment and higher survival rates.

Facts about Breast Cancer:

Early detection saves lives: Approximately 90% of breast cancer patients survive long-term if the disease is detected early.

Self-exams & mammograms: Regular self-examinations and mammograms are essential steps for early detection.

Seeking prompt treatment: Presenting early for treatment can greatly reduce pain, suffering, and, in many cases, save lives.

The Cancer Awareness Marathon proved to be more than just an event; it was a beacon of hope and resilience for the entire community, inspiring many to stay vigilant about their health and support those who are fighting this battle.
