Thabang Phiri, a self-taught visual artist from Palm Springs in the Vaal, has transformed his passion for drawing into a remarkable career. From sketching cartoons as a child to creating intricate cityscapes and portraits, Thabang’s journey is a true testament to his dedication, resilience, and natural talent.

In an interview with Orange Farm News, Thabang shared how his love for art began: “I started drawing at a very young age. I became fascinated with art after watching programmes that featured artists like Leonardo da Vinci and Pablo Picasso. Watching shows like Dragon Ball Z after school, I would buy stickers and practice every day in my scrapbooks. At school, I’d draw on the chalkboard whenever there was no teacher in class or during lunchtime.”

His classmates quickly noticed his talent, especially when he would sketch scenes of Johannesburg – cars, buildings, bridges, and people – all brought to life on paper.

“They encouraged me to keep going, and their support really pushed me to continue refining my craft,” he recalls.

Thabang credits art for helping him avoid negative influences such as crime, drugs, and violence.

“Art taught me to compete only with my past mistakes, not with others. It’s all about showcasing my talent and inspiring other kids to believe that, no matter where you come from, if you have the skill and determination, you can turn your dreams into reality,” said Thabang.

Thabang’s talent has taken him beyond the borders of his hometown. He spent two years in Cape Town, where he was invited to exhibit his work at three different art exhibitions.

“I sold pieces at two exhibitions, and although I didn’t sell anything at the first one, I was just thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase my work. The positive feedback I received kept me going,” he shared.

His biggest highlight came when Hamilton Art Gallery purchased one of his artworks and displayed it in their gallery. His success didn’t stop there. He’s sold his pieces to well-known names in the entertainment industry, including Emtee the Hustler, DJ Jaivane, Q Mark and the Piano Hub DJs Skroef28, Bongza Mlotshwa, and John Bravo.

Thabang was also interviewed on Cape Town TV, where he discussed his unique artistic style. To promote his craft, Thabang ensures he is consistently working on new pieces, posting his work on social media and treating himself as a brand.

“I believe that sponsorships and opportunities come when you least expect it – you never know who’s watching. That’s why I stay focused and committed to my craft, always aiming to inspire others with my work,”he concluded.

Thabang’s social media handles are: @Thabangphiriart on Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, YouTube and Instagram.

If you’re interested in purchasing his artwork or supporting his journey through sponsorships, he can be reached via WhatsApp on 063 597 0464 or email at Thabangphiri814@gmail.com
