The spirit of gratitude and unity shone brightly at Orange Farm Ext 1’s Imbali Combined School’s Thanksgiving Umgidi event, which brought together educators, top-performing students, parents, community members, and recipients of the Nondlela Group Charity Drive.

The event, held on Saturday, 9 September, was a heartfelt celebration that highlighted the importance of giving back to the community and expressing gratitude.

In a true display of South African heritage, the day paid homage to the spirit of Ubuntu through traditional regalia and a touch of blue, symbolizing the school’s colors.

The occasion was graced by Dr. Winnie M Mahasela, a published author, founder and director of the Nondlela Group NPO, who celebrated her birthday month by hosting this special event.

With over 350 guests in attendance, the Thanksgiving Umgidi served as a reminder to express gratitude for the dedication and hard work of the top-performing students and staff at Imbali Combined School. The school, which is the current Top Independent School title holder has for four consecutive years maintained a 100% pass rate, an achievement worth celebrating.

The event was not only a platform for celebrating excellence but also an opportunity to give back to the community. The Nondlela Group Foundation, under Dr. Mahasela’s leadership, generously contributed non-perishable food and preloved clothing collected on Mandela Day to help those in need. The beneficiaries included the school’s Feeding Scheme, disadvantaged school children, and a local Children’s Home.

The celebration featured a diverse array of cultural performances, showcasing the rich tapestry of cultures within the school community. Students took the stage with confidence, presenting traditional dances, songs, and storytelling from various backgrounds. These performances not only entertained but also promoted mutual respect and understanding among the diverse attendees.

The event also included a sumptuous feast, featuring dishes that delighted the taste buds of all present. Dr. Mahasela, a prominent figure in the community, gifted Brahman cattle to the school, further emphasizing the spirit of giving and gratitude.

During an interview with Sedibeng FM 104.8Mhz, Dr Mahasela expressed her profound gratitude to her grandmother, Gogo Nondlela, for imparting the gift of education. Dr. Mahasela’s commitment to education and community-building embodies the ethos of “Living The Legacy: Reconcile Through Education.”
