Residents gathered on 14 May for a day focused on wellness, healthcare access and community support as local organisations partnered to provide free screenings and educational services.
The launch of the Ananda Jayanti Health and Wellness Hub offered residents blood pressure, weight and height screenings, while several organisations shared information aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles and preventative healthcare.
Wellness consultant at Abby Health Simphiwe Ntuli said the screening process is quick, confidential and designed to make healthcare services more accessible.
“It takes about three minutes and you are done,” said Ntuli.
She said residents receive their results via WhatsApp, email or SMS after completing the screenings.
Chairperson of Regenesys Business School Dr Marko Saravanja said the initiative forms part of broader efforts to revive community projects that previously supported residents in the area.
“Last year, I got involved again with organisations and individuals to repair the school and renew not only the school, but also the health centre and other projects that were successful in the past,” he said.
Saravanja added that previous initiatives included clinics, educational programmes, crèches and pregnancy support projects aimed at uplifting the community.
Ward 4 Cllr, Simon Molefe said many residents struggle to access healthcare services close to home.
“People are finding it difficult to access medical services,” said Molefe. “Now elderly people will not have to walk very far to get medication.”
He added that the partnership with Regenesys Business School is also expected to create opportunities for local matriculants through bursaries, learnerships and future development projects linked to a planned computer centre.
Molefe said full clinic operations are expected to begin on 1 June.
Organisations including PinkDrive, loveLife, Indoda Wednesday and Basic Support Package (BSP) also participated in the event, providing support services and information to residents throughout the day.
