The Vereeniging line, PRASA’s longest and one of its most strategic rail corridors, is set for a major revival as work continues to restore services toward Orange Farm and ultimately Vereeniging. Known for its high passenger capacity, the line connects Johannesburg through eastern Soweto, Lenasia and deep into the Vaal region, making it a critical artery for daily commuters.
In a statement released today, Friday, 9 January, PRASA has confirmed that rehabilitation work is currently underway to address a sinkhole between Midway and Lenasia. This forms part of a broader recovery programme aimed at reopening the line at least up to Residensia in the near term. Importantly, all stations along the route are already infrastructure-ready for service once track and Overhead Traction Equipment (OHTE) repairs are completed.
On the PRASA-operated section, the line runs from Johannesburg Park Station through key nodes including:
1. Johannesburg Park Station
2. Braamfontein Station
3. Mayfair Station
4. Grosvenor Station
5. Langlaagte Station
6. Croesus Station
7. Longdale Station
8. New Canada Station

19. Grasmere Station
20. Stretford Orange Farm Station

TRANSNET Vereeniging Portion :
24. Houthouwel Station
25. Ducanville Station
26. Kleigrond Station

Looking ahead into 2026, PRASA’s project scope includes completing sinkhole repairs, replacing damaged tracks and restoring OHTE infrastructure. Once these upgrades are finalised, the corridor will be fully positioned to resume operations and unlock the line’s full potential.
The reopening of the Vereeniging line is expected to significantly improve mobility, support economic activity across Gauteng’s southern belt and reaffirm rail as an affordable, reliable mode of transport for communities along the route.
