On 31 December last year, 37-year-old Thabiso Bereng’s body was discovered in Orange Farm Ext 1 with scars pointing towards a brutal assault, he was stuffed inside a car tire with the intent of being burnt alive. His family found him still alive and rushed him to a local clinic where he was transferring to Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital. Unfortunately, he later succumbed to his injuries.
Thabiso had been dragged through the streets, beaten, and ultimately dumped in Ext 1. The family is devastated and desperate for answers regarding the motive behind their son’s brutal murder and demand the arrest of the suspect(s).
Thabiso’s uncle, Isaac Bereng, expressed his grief, saying: “We are saddened by this incident, and what hurts more is that whoever did this is roaming the streets while our beloved son brutally lost his life. I just want the law to take its course and arrest whoever did this.”
Isaac highlighted the lack of police intervention when the family previously reported two cases of attempted robbery and assault. He believes this tragedy could have been prevented if the police had taken their concerns seriously.
Although suspects were initially arrested, Orange Farms SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Shaan Motsapi clarified that they were brought in for questioning and later released. Motsapi confirmed that the case is still under investigation, urging anyone with information to come forward.
