Johannesburg Water has announced a significant change for the residents of Orange Farm, set to take effect from 1 September 2024. In a move aimed at improving water management and curbing wastage, all households in the area will be transitioned from the current open-mode water meters to prepaid smart meters.
Starting from September, the unlimited free water that Orange Farm residents have been accustomed to will no longer be available. Instead, each household will receive a standard allocation of 6,000 litres of free basic water per month. Any additional water usage will require residents to purchase water credits through various vending platforms that include banking apps, vending stations, and supermarkets.
This transition marks a shift towards a more sustainable water usage model in the community, ensuring that residents have better control over their water consumption and expenses.
Johannesburg Water has also issued a stern reminder that by-law enforcement will be strictly applied. Households found with by-passed or damaged meters will face penalties, as part of the broader effort to maintain the integrity of the water management system.
