The Gauteng Department of Social Development has established a comprehensive admission process for individuals seeking treatment for substance abuse. This process is applicable to those who voluntarily wish to address their addiction as well as those mandated to undergo rehabilitation by the courts. Here’s a detailed outline of the steps involved in gaining admission to rehabilitation centres.
Voluntary Admission
- Walk-In Service: Individuals can visit a Department of Social Development (DSD) office or a DSD-accredited Non-Profit Organization (NPO) without a prior appointment. Upon arrival, staff will provide assistance and explain the admission process. Many people who seek help do so as walk-ins, motivated to start their treatment. It is crucial to act quickly on this motivation, as it may wane over time.
- Initial Screening: After arrival, a preliminary screening will be conducted to assess whether the individual is experiencing a substance use disorder (SUD).
- Comprehensive Assessment: A qualified Social Worker will perform a thorough psychosocial evaluation to determine the most appropriate intervention. Options may include:
- Brief intervention
- Inpatient treatment
- Outpatient care
- Community-based services
- Medical Screening: A medical officer at a primary health care facility will complete a medical screening report to assess any health concerns that may affect treatment.
- Placement: Based on the assessments, placement will be arranged at a state-owned or funded inpatient treatment facility. If suitable, individuals may also be referred to outpatient services, community-based programs, or local day clinics.
- Inpatient Admission: Admission to inpatient treatment facilities must be facilitated by a Social Worker; walk-ins are not permitted at these centres. While awaiting admission, individuals may participate in preparatory group sessions to help ease their transition into treatment.
Involuntary Admission
For those requiring involuntary admission, the process must be initiated by the individual’s significant others. Admission to an inpatient treatment facility will follow a court-ordered committal. The same initial steps, including screening and assessment, will be conducted.
Community Compliance and Awareness
Members of the community are encouraged to verify the compliance and authenticity of service providers by consulting their local Social Development offices. During anti-substance abuse awareness campaigns, individuals affected by substance use can be profiled for intervention; however, no one will be admitted to a rehabilitation facility without undergoing the necessary assessment first.
