Residents have taken a proactive stand against crime by coming together to clean and maintain the Drieziek 4 local park, transforming a known crime hotspot into a safer community space.
The initiative was driven by concerns that overgrown grass in the park had made it easy for criminals to hide, creating fear among residents and limiting the use of the public space. By clearing the grass and committing to regular maintenance, the community aims to reduce criminal activity and improve safety for everyone.
Local leader, Khonzaphi Mbele, praised the community’s efforts and commitment to positive change. “I am happy with how everything turned out. Keeping our area clean is our main goal, as we would like to reduce crime in the community,” he said.
Residents believe that a clean and well-maintained environment discourages crime and encourages greater community involvement. The clean-up also strengthened cooperation among neighbours and showcased the power of collective action in addressing local challenges.
Community members say they plan to continue working together to ensure the park remains clean, safe and accessible, proving that small, local actions can have a meaningful impact in the fight against crime.
