The long-delayed Chris Hani Sports Complex project in Orange Farm is set to resume, following mounting concerns from local stakeholders over stalled progress.

This comes after the Fire Ants Rugby Club, led by its chairperson, Godfrey Duma, raised alarm over delays in the R300 million project, which they say has remained stuck at Phase 1 despite expectations to have reached Phase 3 by now.

The club expressed frustration, highlighting that the lack of progress continues to deprive young athletes in Orange Farm of much-needed sporting facilities.

“As a community-based sports club, we find this situation deeply concerning,” the club said in a media statement, adding that the delay limits opportunities for youth development and access to proper training infrastructure.

They also raised concerns around project management, accountability for public funds, and the overall commitment to township sports development.

The club called on authorities to provide a detailed progress report, revised timelines, and ensure greater accountability and community involvement in the project.

Orange Farm News contacted the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) which confirmed that the project will officially resume today, 30 March.

According to the JDA, construction had been temporarily halted due to budgetary constraints faced by the City of Johannesburg, which affected multiple infrastructure projects.

“The suspension has now been lifted, and the project is scheduled to recommence,” the agency said in a statement.

The JDA reaffirmed its commitment to delivering the sports complex, describing it as a critical investment in community development that will promote youth empowerment and provide accessible sporting facilities.

The agency added that it will continue working closely with the City of Johannesburg, contractors, and local stakeholders to ensure efficient and transparent implementation.

It also committed to improving communication and providing updates as construction progresses.

The resumption of the project brings renewed hope to the Orange Farm community, where many believe the facility will play a vital role in addressing social challenges such as youth unemployment, crime, and substance abuse through sport.
