Twelve boys, including minors from Orange Farm and Ennerdale, were rescued from an illegal initiation school in the mountainous area between Ennerdale and Lawley on Wednesday, 18 June.
The operation was led by the Sedibeng District Initiation School Task Team with critical assistance from concerned Orange Farm community members. Nine of the rescued boys are from Orange Farm, while one is from Ennerdale.
It is believed that they were taken without parental consent or knowledge. Their families, fearing for the worst, reported the matter to the police, prompting the registration of several missing person dockets.
Sgt SJ Motsapi, spokesperson for Orange Farms SAPS, praised the swift response from both officers and residents. “We are grateful for the cooperation from the community, which helped us track down and rescue the boys. These illegal schools put lives at risk, and we will not tolerate such criminal behaviour,” he said.
Police investigations are ongoing to locate the perpetrators and dismantle any networks operating illegal initiation practices.
Authorities are urging the public to come forward with information by calling 08600 10111, using the MySAPS app, or contacting Orange Farms SAPS directly on (011) 213 8023/8025/8026.
