Ext 1’s own Ntando Mokoena, better known as Dontan, is ready to make his official mark on the music scene with the release of his debut single, ‘Why’, dropping 2 June across major streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.
The single kicks off a new era for the 19-year-old artist, leading up to his much-anticipated mixtape, Ukiyo- a Japanese term meaning “living in the moment”- set to launch on 22 June.
He began recording music at just 13 using nothing but his phone. His early tracks, uploaded to SoundCloud, helped him build a loyal following that continues to grow.
“I’ve always loved music-it’s more than a passion, it’s who I am,” he shared.
Born in Soweto and raised in Orange Farm, Dontan credits his journey between the two townships for shaping his identity and artistic drive. In 2024, he faced a major setback when his equipment was stolen, forcing him to start over and re-record his entire album-but he never lost momentum. Now armed with experience and determination, he’s focused on taking his sound to the world.
“I want to be one of the greats to come out of Orange Farm and Johannesburg,” said Dontan.
