Drieziek 5’s Ubumbano Dignity Foundation celebrated Mandela Day by dedicating their 67 minutes to spending time with local children and serving them warm, delicious meals.
The Foundation, which has been running a soup kitchen for some time, aims to combat poverty in their community. However, a lack of donors has made it challenging to consistently provide meals for those in need. Many of the children who benefit from the soup kitchen come from the Mokokotlong Informal Settlements, where poverty is widespread and unemployment among parents is high. For these children, the soup kitchen is often their only source of a proper meal.
Ubumbano’s Sphelele ‘Specialist’ Lolwane, said: “We follow the values of the late Tata Madiba, who emphasised the importance of giving back. Even without sponsorship, we do our best with what we have to provide meals for children. We are working on hosting the biggest event of the year to fundraise for the soup kitchen. This event will create jobs for the day and feature media coverage, offering exposure to emerging artists from Orange Farm. We will keep everyone updated on the event and would greatly appreciate any support.”
