The African National Congress (ANC), Democratic Alliance (DA), Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), Patriotic Alliance (PA), and GOOD have signed an agreement to form a Government of National Unity (GNU).
This coalition aims to bring together diverse political parties represented in national and provincial legislatures, working collectively in both the executive and legislative branches based on proportional representation.
Residents shared their thoughts on the GNU:
Percy Tsotetsi: It’s a good idea. Maybe there will be change in government, more jobs will be created, municipalities cleaned and corruption reduced. I hope the GNU changes the 18-35 hiring rule because those over 35 need jobs too. This current rule is unfair. I really hope for the best in government.
Sesethu Mabunzi: It won’t work. I believe we will continue to struggle unless they give the DA full control. Under Ramaphosa, we faced corruption, crime, unemployment, loadshedding and more. If this government wants to bring change, it must address these issues.
Mshini Comedian: I believe there will be change since decisions will no longer be made by one party but by multiple parties. They will brainstorm and come up with ideas to bring change. They must focus on job creation, fighting crime and corruption and ending loadshedding. These are the biggest challenges the country faces.
Junior Skhosana: I don’t think it will work because their need to form a GNU shows they are failing individually. However, let’s not judge quickly. Let’s give the GNU time to see what they can bring. I hope this is not just a game of adding numbers. If they don’t tackle crime, unemployment and corruption, this government is pointless. We want change.
