Qualifying beneficiaries of the Sebokeng Extension 30 Mega Project received their new homes on Thursday, 1 October, marking the end of a decades-long wait for some families.
Gauteng Human Settlements MEC Tasneem Motara, together with Emfuleni Local Municipality Executive Mayor Cllr Hassan Mosola Mako, officially handed over the houses to beneficiaries.
Mako was joined by MMC for Human Settlements Cllr Vincent Jones during the handover.
According to Emfuleni Local Municipality, some beneficiaries have been on the housing waiting list since 1999 and have spent more than 20 years living in shacks and rented rooms.
For these families, receiving their homes marks the beginning of a new chapter, providing them and their children and grandchildren with permanent and secure housing.
The municipality described the occasion as a day of “restored dignity” for Sebokeng residents who had waited years to become homeowners.
The handover forms part of the Informal Settlement Eradication Programme, which seeks to provide sustainable human settlements and improve living conditions for qualifying residents.
The municipality congratulated the beneficiaries as they received their homes and began a new chapter with their families.
