Two suspected robbers were shot and killed during a confrontation with police in Sebokeng on Monday afternoon, 13 April 2026, in an incident that highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to disrupt violent crime in the Vaal and surrounding areas.
According to Gauteng police, members of the Tactical Response Team (TRT) were conducting routine patrols along Houtkop Road when they identified a vehicle believed to have been hijacked and fitted with false registration plates. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle using sirens, but the driver sped off, triggering a high-speed chase.
Police say shots were fired at officers during the pursuit, prompting them to return fire. The chase ended when the suspects’ vehicle overturned. One of the suspects reportedly attempted to flee on foot but collapsed a short distance from the scene. Both suspects were declared dead by paramedics.
A firearm was recovered at the scene, along with explosives found inside the vehicle. Authorities have confirmed that the vehicle had been reported stolen in Carletonville in January 2026.
Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said: “We are investigating a case of attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and explosives following an exchange of gunfire between police and suspects. The vehicle has been positively identified as stolen, and further investigations are underway.”
While investigations continue, the incident underscores the ongoing threat posed by heavily armed suspects operating in the region. Police have reiterated that intelligence-driven patrols remain key in preventing serious and violent crimes.
