Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo will officially unveil the revamped Lilly Street Park in Drieziek, today, 23 July 2026.
The R900 000 revitalisation project aims to provide local children and families with a safer, cleaner and more welcoming recreational space.
Upgrades to the park include new playground equipment with rubber matting, freshly planted trees, additional waste bins and a high-mast light to improve visibility and help discourage criminal activity.
The Johannesburg Roads Agency also contributed to the project by improving road markings near the facility.
Regional staff will regularly patrol and inspect the park, while Park Rangers will conduct random visits to help ensure the public space remains safe and well maintained.
MMC for Community Development Councillor Thapelo Amad said the park’s future would depend on residents protecting the facility.
“Lilly Street Park is a promise to our children and families, and its future depends on residents becoming the guardian angels of this park,” Amad said.
“We are counting on you to protect it and to ensure that respect, dignity and unity prevail at all times in this park.”
During the handover, residents and learners are expected to join the MMC in taking a pledge to protect the park and keep it clean, safe and vibrant.
The event will also be attended by the ward councillor, regional officials, Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo management, Park Rangers, educators and members of the media.
The unveiling will take place at Lilly Street Park in Drieziek from 08:30 to 13:00.
