Leratong Day Care in Drieziek 4 received a colourful classroom refresh when volunteers rolled up their sleeves to clean, paint and enhance the learning space for its young children.
Ekudeni Key Properties visited the centre on Mandela Day, 18 July, transforming their 67 minutes of service into a practical project that will continue benefiting learners beyond the annual commemoration.
With paintbrushes in hand, the team worked together to create a brighter and more welcoming environment where children can learn, play and grow.
Precious Viakazi, principal and director of Ekudeni Key Properties, said the initiative was inspired by Nelson Mandela’s belief that ordinary people can create meaningful change through service.
“Mandela Day reminds us that change does not always require grand gestures. By giving our time and working together, we were able to create a better environment for the children at Leratong Day Care,” Viakazi said.
She added that the project was about more than applying a fresh coat of paint. It was also about showing the children and staff that their learning environment matters and that the wider community cares about their well-being.
The team’s contribution left the day care with a refreshed classroom and demonstrated how a few hours of teamwork can create an impact that lasts far beyond Mandela Day.
For the children of Leratong, the brighter walls now offer more than a splash of colour. They represent a community investing in their future.
