On 14 June, the Raphela Ground in Ext 3 buzzed with energy as the Southern African Association of Youth Clubs (SAAYC) hosted the Youth Hustle U17 Tournament, celebrating Youth Month in spectacular style.
Far more than just a soccer tournament, the event blended competitive sport with entrepreneurship, health awareness and youth empowerment. The tournament saw four talented U17 teams battle it out in thrilling matches. United Future Stars defeated Gunners Sporting Academy 2-1 in the first semi-final, while Happy Boys and Girls edged out City Rovers 2-0.
In a nail-biting final, United Future Stars claimed victory with a 1-0 win, walking away with gold medals, a trophy, and a full soccer kit.
The tournament’s standout moment came from Happy Boys’ goalkeeper, Samukelo, who scored two goals from his own post-a rare and electrifying achievement that earned him the Special Player of the Tournament title.
Beyond the pitch, the day included free health screenings by Sizanani Community Development Organisation, with 30 youth receiving health vouchers and smiley bags. The Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture provided soccer balls, while SAAYC Board Member Mr K Phakgadi inspired attendees with a message of using sport as a springboard to success.
“This was a celebration of hustle -where every pass, every test and every connection represented a step toward a brighter future,” said the organisers.
Chairperson of United Future Stars, Tshepiso “Nkunzi” Ncala, expressed gratitude: “Thanks to SAAYC and our coaches. This meant a lot to us, we brought the kit and trophy home.”
With zero incidents reported, strong community partnerships and unforgettable moments, the tournament proved that sport can be a powerful tool for unity, growth and youth transformation.
