On 3 September, She Evolves concluded its “1000 Stories, 100,000 Trees” competition, which challenged 14 schools across Orange Farm, Poortjie, and Tembisa to create Green Reflection Spaces on their campuses. Over six weeks, students planted trees, designed inspiring spaces, and shared their stories, combining environmental action with creativity. Presentations were held on 4, 5, and 8 September, and winners were celebrated on 9 September with a prize-giving ceremony.
“We use the power of storytelling to amplify voices while teaching the importance of caring for our environment,” said the organisers. Students were judged on tree planting and care, creativity, teamwork, storytelling, and community involvement. Schools documented their journeys through diaries, poems, drawings, and skits, showing dedication and imagination.
Tshepana Primary School in Orange Farm claimed first place, Pohopedi Primary in Poortjie took second and Peter Zongwane in Tembisa was the runner-up.
“We are proud to see young minds embracing nature, creativity and teamwork. These Green Reflection Spaces will leave a lasting legacy for generations,” the organisers added.
This initiative was supported by City Parks and Zoos, Botanical Gardens, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment (DFFE), Styles_By_Nonny, Owe2Green Economy, and the Unlimited Peace and Smiles organization.
