The Johannesburg Health District hosted a health day for elderly persons in the community of Orange Farm, on 15 May. The day was hosted for the purpose of raising awareness on elderly people who face abuse in their homes and the broader community.
Medical professionals from Region G gathered at Arekopaneng Centre to bring vital health services to senior citizens of Orange Farm and neighbouring areas. Various health stakeholders shared valuable information around different types of abuse faced by elderly people and that they can report such cases to nurses and social workers that are found in local clinics.
A representative from Lawyers Against Abuse shared vital information in regards to the services that they render, which include free legal representation on abuse cases, protection orders and support on criminal cases. They emphasised that their services are free for women of all ages, children and elderly persons.
A dietician shared the types of foods that are harmful and healthy for people that are diagnosed with diabetes and high blood pressure. Avoiding sugar, salt and white flour, and, eating more fibre, green vegetables and protein were some of the advices that come out strongly. The importance of walking was also emphasised, as it helps to reduce these diseases. The event kick-started with a health talk in the sportshall then proceeded outdoors were stalls from various stakeholders were present to share information, conduct vital checks and screen for diseases.
Some of the stakeholders that were present include, Rhiza Babuyile mobile clinic, Cipla, Avbob, Sizanani, Right to Care, BioVac, Assupol, Johannesburg Health Departments and many others. The day was a great success, since more than 300 people were in attendance and all of them received these services.
