The Acting Sedibeng District Commissioner, Brigadier Mashole Manamela, is leading a liquor destruction operation as part of the ongoing Operation Shanela campaign aimed at fighting crime and enforcing liquor compliance across the district.
Police stations participating in the operation include De Deur, Evaton, Orange Farm, Sebokeng, Sharpeville, Vanderbijlpark and Vereeniging.
According to police, liquor abuse remains one of the major contributing factors to crimes such as gender-based violence and domestic violence, prompting continued efforts to clamp down on illegal liquor trading.
The liquor being destroyed was confiscated during Operation Shanela raids and liquor compliance inspections conducted at various liquor outlets. Authorities found that several establishments were operating without the necessary licences and documentation required to legally sell alcohol.
In total, 3,284,728 millilitres of liquor are being destroyed during the operation.
Police say the operation forms part of broader crime prevention efforts to create safer communities and ensure businesses comply with the law.
