On 8 March, Orange Farms SAPS, Sector managers, social crime prevention, domestic violence coordinators and flash coordinators addressed learners at Lesedi La Kreste, Refalletse and Langalibalele Dube Primary Schools during a Schools Safety Campaign.
Bullying; theft; gangsterism; rape; peer pressure; violence;carrying of dangerous weapons in school; children in conflict with the law and lawlessness in and outside the school were among the issues discussed.
At Lesedi La Kreste Primary, it was discovered that there was a serious parental care/ neglect problem. Most pupils were found to be untidy early in the mornings. The officials urged parents to ensure that the learners’ uniforms are washed and ironed while shoes are polished so that their children are clean. SAPS explained that neatness also boosts confidence which can lead to good results.
Meanwhile, Refalletse Primary faced bullying challenges and learners were cautioned and taught to never bully each other, in and outside, the school.
The awareness campaign ended on a worrying note at Langalibalele Primary where it was discovered that most pupils had self-inflicted injuries on the dorsal side of their hands. This trend or these injuries raised suspicion of some evil spirit. Parents, SGB, school management, learners and Orange Farm SAPS plan to address this issue in detail to find solutions.
